How Can high Blood Pressure Along With Irregular Heart Beat Be Treated?

My husband is 84 years old, is 5 7 tall and weighs 166 lbs. His parents had a history of strokes, but he has never had one, to my knowledge. He has atrial fibrillation, is diabetic, and has a pacemaker. He takes medicine for diabetes, irregular heart rhythm, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Sometimes after he has been standing for a while and attempts to resume walking, his legs won t move normally and he cannot stand on his own. Then, I have to hold him up while he takes each step to prevent him from falling. What could be causing his legs not to work after prolonged standing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

We will try to help you in the best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your husband had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, he is having a postural drop of blood pressure and can be due to drug-related or due to autonomic neuropathy caused by diabetes. Also blood pressure medication needs to be reviewed again.

He is considered a high-risk patient for stroke prophylaxis as with chronic atrial fibrillation he may need to be continued on long-term anticoagulant therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
